Once again, the Huffington Post regurgitates a blog post and tries to pass it off as a news story. This time they chose a post by Laura Bassett, a literary one-trick pony with the promotion of so-called “women’s reproductive rights” as her only trumpet.
In her assault on our countries Catholic bishops “The Men Behind The War on Women“, she shows an amazing lack of understanding of what is meant by the constitutional guarantee of Freedom of Religion. Put most succinctly the amendment is about allowing, without Government interference, a particular faith to “faithful to that faith”. It does not, however, preclude the faithful of our country from participating in the political arena.
Ms. Bassett seems most upset that the Catholic bishops are being…. well… Catholic.
She also seems to be in a state of shock that an elected official would actually try to represent the people who elected them. (Frankly, this sort of shocks me as well, but that is meat for another post)
I had seriously thought about commenting on her post, piece by piece, but I realized it was:
1. just too easy and
2. just to much time, as her gaseous and bloated post was just too long to have my readers sit through my commentary. It was just plain uncharitable for me to do so. And
3. the tenor of her writing is a parody of itself, filled with the cliches of the pro-death movement and a genuine hatred for the Catholic Faith, even the most hardened bigot can see through the thin veneer of journalism.
If what I learned in high school jounalism is true, that the first few lines of an article hold the gist of the entire piece, then her opening words are enough:
A group of men with no real background in law or medicine, but blessed with a strong personal interest in women’s bodies, have quietly influenced all of the major anti-abortion legislation over the past several years. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops may be one of the quietest, yet most powerful lobbies on Capitol Hill, with political allies that have enabled them to roll back decades of law and precedent.
Over the past two years the GOP-controlled House of Representatives has launched one of the most extreme assaults on women’s choice the U.S. has seen in decades.
I encourage you, if you have the stomach for it, to read the whole piece. Then I would encourage you to leave a little something in the combox….. oh, really? She doesn’t have one? No surprise there.
So leave a comment in mine.
